asa vauclair (born october 13, 1984) is an irish-american actor, known for his role as james buchanan "bucky" barnes/winter soldier in the marvel cinematic universe. he also appeared in the 2010 film inception as athur. he made his film debut as patrick "kitten" braden in the irish film breakfast on pluto, a role for which he won the irish film & television award for best actor in a lead role - film, the palić film festival award for best actor, and was nomiated for a golden globe award and a satellite award.
early childhood
vauclair was born in ballintemple, a suburb of cork, ireland. his father, pat, works as an accountant and his mother, blathnaid, is a retired army nurse. as a child, vauclair first dreamt of being a musician - his mother had been classically trained in both the piano and the violin in her youth, talents that she passed onto her children. the family moved to america when vauclair was thirteen, where they resided in houston, texas. vauclair attended seven lakes high school, where he was known to be a bit of a problem child. according to vauclair, "i was always getting into trouble - i had a hard time concentrating on anything, and all i wanted to do was goof off and play. i didn't really have any interest in school." he graduated in 2001. career
vauclair became interested in acting soon after graduating, when a friend invited him to several plays she was performing in. seeing acting live sparked an interest in him that he hadn't had before, and vauclair became very involved with the community theatre in houston, and then in dallas. he auditioned for a few films (including the role of his first movie) without any success, until 2005 when he was contact by neil jordan, who had decided to revisit transgender and i.r.a. issues in the film breakfast on pluto. vauclair returned to ireland for the role, which he has repeatedly stated was his "hardest film ever." he prepared for the role by meeting a transgender woman named lilianne, who took him him under her wing. to this day, the two are still friends, and vauclair has often called her the love of his life. vauclair's performance was praised highly, and was nominated for a golden globe award for best actor. premiere magazine cited his performance in their "the 24 finest performances of 2005" feature. vauclair went on to star in the film sunshine, which recieved generally favorable reviews, and vauclair was nomiated for multiple awards for his role. he went on to take a small break from filming, appearing only in a short film called "the horribly slow murderer with the extremely inefficient weapon" in 2008, to the surprise of many of his fans, as his first two movies had been more dramatic. he next appeared in christopher nolan's inception, in which he played the role of arthur. it was his performance in inception which drew attention to him for the role of captain america's best friend in the upcoming marvel movie, a role for which he audition with "my heart in my throat. i've always loved captain america and the comics, and i was drawn to the role of bucky in the same way i was drawn to kitten. it felt like, if i couldn't play him, my life was over." vauclair was finalized for the role, for which he recieved positive reviews. he returned to play the titular character in captain america: the winter soldier and captain america: civil war. vauclair has also done voice work for the video game captain america: super soldier as james "bucky" barnes, and the game until dawn as mike. he's also appeared in the music video for glass animal's "gooey" and on the christmas special of "lip sync battle" as himself alongside his co-stars in the night before. personal life
vauclair was married to (blah blah blah someone here) from 20xx to 20xx, divorcing due to "mutual differences." the pair are still seen together and both claim to be "good friends." he was linked to actresses (so and so) and musician (so and so), though neither relationship was confirmed. • Named her dog Odie after the Garfield comics just so they could have being a girl with a boys' name in common. • Is very close with her siblings and often visits them (or vice versa) despite the fact that the three of them all live miles apart in different cities. • Has a large collection of notebooks with different designs and pens in all different types and colors. She tries her best to actually put most of them to use by filling at least one page of one notebook a day. • Finds visual art fascinating and sometimes draws and paints for fun. She doesn't consider herself particularly talented in that area at all but has retained many tips and tricks from her more visual art-minded friends from high school and college. • Loves social media and is active on several platforms, namely Twitter and Instagram. She also has a Tumblr blog that she posts short stories and other musings on semi-regularly. Occasionally she reblogs random things she likes, but she tends to save that for a secret account whose name she's never publicly shared. On Facebook, which she mainly uses to keep in touch with family, she uses the name "Sencer Speale" and has her account on tight lockdown. • Once dyed her hair blonde on a whim as a teenager and swore to never mess with it again—until she dyed it blonde for Don't Trust the B and briefly kept it that color. • 100% awful at serious relationships, despite eventually wanting to settle down and start a family some day.
