A Dallas man has been charged with intoxication manslaughter after his SUV swerved into the wrong lane on Interstate 30 in Mesquite late Friday, police said, resulting in the death of four people and causing a pileup on the highway.
James Martinez-Johnson, 41, hit a 2015 Mazda 3 head-on at about 11:50 a.m. The crash caused a chain reaction involving four cars and an 18-wheeler, police said.
The driver of the Mazda, identified as Benjamin Matthew Carvey (31), died at the scene. His passenger, Jason Lewis-Carvey (34), died at the local hospital. The other two deaths were the driver of the 2008 Toyota Corolla the Mazda was pushed into, Melina Lee (28) and her daughter (4).
Martinez-Johnson was arrested after a police officer chased him down as he tried to run away, police said.
He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
